Better late than never. 

So I missed last Friday’s update due to tiredness. Here’s the salad I had. 

Yes,  it was from a different company and no I like my usual salad better. 

Pros of new salad: more veggie overall; uses Kewpie salad dressing

Cons of new salad: lesser salad dressing than the old salad despite there being more salad; no fork! 

So the fact that the salad does not come with a fork is a deal-breaker for me. Thank God I kept a spare fork in my bag. If not, I won’t be able to have dinner that day. 

Not to mention, I don’t like salad all that much to begin with and I have insufficient salad dressing to cover the bitterness of raw vegetable is just a turn-off.

Sufficient to say, I won’t be buying this salad again.

Garden salad

Yeap, that’s dinner today. 

Speaking of which,  I never know what garden salad really is. People seem to make it but each garden salad recipe is unique in its own way. 

So let’s look at what the Internet has to say about garden salad

Wikipedia states:

Garden salads use a base of leafy greens like lettuce,  arugula,  kale or spinach; they are common enough that the word salad alone often refers specifically to garden salads

BBC good food recommends

Using whatever herbs you have in the garden, and if you have your own lettuce, too, all the better for this simple side dish

Wikihow says:

They can be made with vegetables straight from your garden, including carrots,  cucumbers, and tomatoes. Once you know how to make a basic garden salad,  you can alter it and put your own spin on it. 

And because Wikipedia equates Garden salad to green salad,  I’m just going to toss in Jamie Oliver’s comments on green salad:

I’m completely addicted to green salad. Even the most humble, basic one, with a few added herbs, can be a treat if dressed properly. You can tell a lot about a restaurant by the standard of its green salad – so many places get it wrong, but when they get it right, it’s perfection. Although a great one doesn’t need any extras, you can always toss in simple tasks such as cooked green beans, sweat raw peas, edible flowers, shaved fennel, or fresh mint, parsley, ball or tarragon leaves if you like. Great stuff .

Seems like the general consensus is that garden salad doesn’t have a formula or any fundamental ingredients.  Anything can go into a garden salad and it will still be a garden salad. It can essentially be whatever you want it to be, a jack-of-all-trades of salads, if you will.

First day

Things that went wrong today include:

  • Tech issues at workplace
  • Leaving work later due to said tech issues
  • The alternative grocer that I chose today does not sell packed salad 
  • The chocolate milk I bought has gone bad

So much for a spanking new first day of the salad journey. Murphy’s law is a bitch,  if I ever subscribed to that belief. Therefore, due to all these extenuating circumstances,  I am currently having a pack of cherry tomatoes as dinner. Yeah,  the chocolate milk in the picture is spoilt. Sighhhh. This is going to a long one month. 

Background –  cause every good story needs one

Being a full time employee and part time student who is sitting for the Malaysian Certificate of Legal Practice (CLP)  is no laughing matter. To be honest,  CLP itself sends shiver down the spines of most graduates holding an international law degree. Yet, the me a-few-months-younger thought it would be a brilliant idea to take on a full time position at one of the busiest law firm in Malaysia while studying for CLP. Current-me has not forgiven younger-me of this folly as of yet but that is another matter entirely.

In any case, due to my less-than-brilliant idea,  I am now stuck in the predicament where I attempt to arrive at class on time while braving the Kuala Lumpur (KL) traffic and getting  dinner in the span of an hour or less.

My friend,  who is a fellow colleague,  classmate and a big fan of salad (Do not ask me why.  I don’t attempt to understand the logic of a salad lover although I love her all the same), suggested that we get salad to go from the grocer nearby our office so that we can arrive at class on time. Indeed, her plan succeeded.

So, in light of the fact that I don’t like salad,  she has challenged me to have salad until the end of March whenever I have CLP classes after work in return for a free Boost Juice. This blog,  therefore,  shall chronicle my journey in an attempt to get free drinks cause I am such a cheapskate.
